The best paver designs start with the way you use the yard, then add a few details that make the surface feel designed instead of poured. These ideas come from three recent projects in Campbell, Woodside and San Jose. You can see every photo on our projects page.
1. Let a curve lead the eye
In Woodside, the driveway curves gently past planting beds and mature trees instead of running straight to the garage. A curve makes a large paved area feel smaller and friendlier, and a stone edge along the outside keeps the line crisp.
2. Frame the field with a contrasting border
The Campbell patio uses a light gray field with a darker border that traces every curve. The border works like a picture frame: it gives the patio a clear edge against the turf and also helps hold the pavers in place.

3. Use stepping stones and pebbles for side yards
A narrow side yard does not need a solid surface. Large stepping stones set in pebbles give a clean path, let water drain and look good with low path lights. In Campbell, this walkway replaced a bare concrete slab and now leads to an outdoor shower.
4. Build seating into the patio
Round stone seat walls around the palm trees in Campbell turn the trees into places to sit. Low walls like these add seating without furniture, and a planter wall along the fence adds a planting bed at the same time.
5. Break up paving with turf and mulch
The San Jose front yard is compact, so the design leans on contrast: an island of artificial turf in dark red mulch, with pale tan pavers for the walkway and steps. The soft shape of the turf repeats the curve of the steps, and the yard stays green without mowing or watering.

6. Make the steps a feature
Curved steps with rounded edges make an entry feel welcoming. They are also where paver work is least forgiving: every riser has to be the same height and the base underneath has to be compacted so nothing settles.
7. Match the color to the setting
Warm sand tones suit the shade and greenery of the Woodside property. Light gray with a darker border and a dark privacy fence gives the Campbell yard a more modern look. Look at the pavers in your own light, next to your house and your plants, before you decide.
If one of these ideas fits your yard, we would be glad to talk it through at a free estimate.
